CRAAM a History - Scenario/Synopsis.

In a world not far removed from the present, it may be possible to digitise everything that makes a person who they are. Their thought’s, dreams, memories, loves & hates, even the will to live.  All could be transferred to ‘CRAAM’ (Cryo-Random-Auto-Active-Memory) for return to life sometime in the future when technology is capable of transferring the CRAAM entity back to an appropriate body.

.-…-.

A CRAAM is a one inch cube of synthetic crystal; created to simulate a human brain, to house a mind, nurture it, keep it indefinitely alive, active and in a viable state.   This is accomplished by providing constantly evolving scenario’s, stimulating the CM (crystal mind), allowing it to experience the illusion of normality. The CM will appear to be living a real existence, on a day to day basis. The CM might be digitised moments before or after natural death, accident trauma, or prolonged illness.  The CM’s intention is to remain in a CRAAM cube until technology makes it possible for their consciousness to be relocated, at some future date, possibly to a cloned body - grown to order. Possibly even an artificial form could be created; though initially the body of a convicted felon sentenced to a fixed term of CM existence would be most likely.

.-…-.

CRAAM was originally created as a cost effective solution to over crowded prisons.

Used to reduce pressure on the penal system by allow the body to remain free, on a temporary license, whilst its mind is being rehabilitated.

So, when a person is convicted and sentenced to five years, they become a CM, plugged into the Correctional Computer System, to be re-educated by reliving their crime from the victim’s perspective, then from their own, repeatedly, until they feel remorse and display regret for their actions.

This is the start of a healing process that will reverse and modify their antisocial genetic tendencies.   During their sentence criminals are wards of the court.  Their bodies may be leased out and their modified minds utilised, in service to the community, as part of their re-education and in payment of their debt to society.

This service can take many forms, depending on their reaction to the scenario’s they are required to experience. Occasionally these may be purely for the, not strictly legal, entertainment of computer gamesters who are keen to pit their ingenuity against that of a criminal mind.

But, there are still boundaries, in this new CRAAM field, that need to be defined each should give rise to stories.   Examples:

    1. Could a CM be harnessed to a machine? An aircraft, a submersible vessel, or a space craft, with the controls of the mechanism serving as a substitute body; a mind extension, providing it with external stimulus and contact?

    2. So, what if a lessee should refuse to give up a body, at the completion of its owner’s sentence?

    3. Would it be possible to return an ex-convict to the wrong body?

    4. What if a body died naturally during the CM’s sentence?

    5. What if the CRAAM device were damaged, broken or mislaid during the sentence?

    6. What if a murder victim were preserved in CRAAM, prior too or, shortly after their death, could they then lay claim to their murderer’s body as recompense?

    7. When a terminally ill patient is digitised prior to, or just after death, does their estate belong to the ‘CM’ or to the family who buried its body?

    8. Could an insurance company prolong life indefinitely, with CRAAM, to avoid paying out on a policy?

    9.  As time passes CRAAM becomes smaller and its capacity increases to house 10, 100, a 1,000 CM entities within a single unit.  This would be composed of tiny salt crystal like cubes, an array of which might resemble a sugar cube and contain a whole community.   Eventually it will be possible to house tens and hundreds of thousands of CM entities in a single CRAAM unit.

   10. Could they house the inhabitants of a dying world and transport them to begin anew in another galaxy, in a space craft piloted by CM’s?

   11. Could they transport a container, filled with CRAAM cubes, across the galaxy to be dispersed, on other worlds, in hundreds of alien environments?

   12. Could CM’s colonise environments completely hostile to mankind, by entering into symbiotic bonds, with native life forms (possibly non sentient), then through them take control of that environment?

   13. In this manner would humankind eventually conquer the universe?

   14. Would they then still be human? Would they still be able to recognise and live, in harmony, with these new forms of humankind?  One, in all its strange and diverse manifestations?

   15. What of a first meeting with CM’s that took a different path, returning to visit a community on a world that had developed a simplistic agricultural/arboreal culture.

   16. In the unimaginably distant future, when Sol has become a red dwarf and the earth is a very different place, will some CM’s return on a pilgrimage to seek their roots?
   17.  How will earth be remembered in their legends?

   18.  What will they then be like, how will they relate to the monument mankind must eventually set up, in their vanity, for others to find?

This is a license - to any interested writers to use this as a template in order to create stories.   Each story needs only to advance the history of CRAAM it doesn’t need to be  full blown Sci-Fi; it can be any genre set   against this Scenario.  Inform & Acknowledge me please.
